Simple Pumpkin Free Knitting Pattern

A knit pumpkin is a quick and easy knitting project that’s super beginner friendly! You can choose if you want to knit your pumpkin flat or in the round - the end result will be the same! Also, this pattern uses worsted weight yarn, but feel free to use any other yarn weight to create this project - just be aware that your needed yardage may differ (but you can knit the pumpkin until you run out of yarn), and your pumpkin may be different in circumference & diameter if you follow the same stitch counts. But, after all, it’s a piece of home decor and small sizing differences won’t be critical!
Tools & Supplies
To create one pumpkin, you’ll need:
approx. 75m of worsted weight cotton yarn, I used Drops Paris, you may also choose Lion Brand 24/7 cotton, Lion Brand Pima Cotton or Knit Picks Dishie.
4 mm (US 6) circular needles 40 cm (16") cord if knitting the pumpkin in the round, or straight/ciruclar needles in the same size if you knit the pumpkin flat
1 stitch marker (if knitting the pumpkin in the round)
tapestry needle
fiber fill - or some yarn scraps you gathered from previous projects!
cinnamon stick, or a piece of stick or similar item for the stem
You can use any yarn you wish for this pumpkin - if you choose a lighter yarn, your pumpkin will turn out smaller, and if you use a more bulky one - the pumpkin will be larger. In any case make sure to go down a needle size than the size recommended by yarn producer so that the filling doesn’t show through.

Instructions

Cast on 65 stitches, place marker and join for working in the in the round. Be careful not to twist the stitches!

Cast on 67 stitches, then work in stockinette stitch (work Rows 1 - 2) until you have knit approx. 15 cm (6”) long rectangle.
Row 1 (Right Side): knit all stitches.
Row 2 (Wrong Side): purl all stitches.
Next, bind off all the stitches. Cut yarn leaving approx. 3 m (3 yds) long tail, and seam the side edges so that a tube is created, then move to assembly & finishing section.

Thread the needle and sew a running stitch around the bind off end of the pumpkin, then cinch it together.
Lay the pumpkin tube up, so that the closed edge is on the bottom. Pass the needle inside the tube and sew a running stitch around the cast on edge - but don’t cinch it together yet.
Fill the inside of the pumpkin with fiber fill.
Pull the yarn tight to close the top of the pumpkin.
Now you’ll shape the pumpkin - pass the working yarn along the outside of the pumpkin, insert the needle through the bottom opening all the way up and again pass the thread outside the pumpkin. Each yarn pass outside the pumpkin will create a distinct part - pull the yarn tight with every pass so that the parting is visible.
Finish shaping when you have as many parts as desired. Secure the yarn end with a tight knot at the bottom pumpkin opening.
Finish the pumpkin with a cinnamon stick or other stem material you have!
