sizes
One size - width 36 cm (14.5”), length 42 cm (17”).
supplies
yarn
For this tea towel I used Drops Paris in colorways: desert rose as the main color and off-white (17) as the contrast color for border. This towel is worked in worsted weight yarn, which is fairly popular and you could choose one of these alternatives:
Yardage: main color: 165 m (180 yds), contrast color: 45 m (50 yds).
HOOK
5 mm (H-8) hook
other notions
Tapestry needle and scissors.
gauge
13 stitches x 12 rows in 10x10 cm (4x4”) in suzette stitch, blocked
To swatch, chain an odd number of sts, work Row 1 of the towel body once, then repeat Row 2 until desired length.
pattern notes
Video tutorials for specific techniques are linked and showing as yellow.
This pattern is written in standard US terms.
The turning chain doesn't count as a stitch.
When working the suzette stitch - the main stitch of the pattern, you will be working only in the sc sts from the previous row - 1 sc and 1 dc will be worked into the same stitch.
You can also use DK weight yarn instead of worsted, if preferred - though this will alter the towel dimensions and yardage.
If you'd like to modify the size of the towel - to ensure the same flow of the scallop border, modify the stitch count and/or row count in multiples of 4.
instructions
TOWEL BODY
Using the main color, ch 43, then work Row 1 once.
Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, then sc in each ch until end of row, ch 1, turn. [42 sc]
Next, work Row 2 a total of 42 times.
Row 2: sc into the first st, *skip 1 st, (1 sc, 1 dc) into the next st* until 1 st left, sc 1, ch 1, turn. [42 sts = 22 sc, 20 dc]
Last, work Row 3 once.
Row 3: sc into the first st, sc in each st across. [42 sc]
Fasten off the main color.
44 rows worked in total.
BORDER
Join the contrast color in the same corner as you fastened off the main color, ch 1, rotate the towel clockwise to work along the edge of the rows, 2 sc in the first row, then sc in the end of every row across.
At the next corner, rotate the towel clockwise, 2 sc into the first st, then sc in each st across.
At the next corner, rotate the towel clockwise to work along the edge of rows, 2 sc in the first row, then sc in the beginning of every row across.
At the last corner, rotate the towel clockwise, 2 sc in the first st, then sc in every st across. Join with sl st to the first sc, ch 1. [176 sts]
Effectively, you are working sc around the towel - placing 1 sc per each stitch and row, and an additional sc in each corner.
Next, work Rnd 1 once.
Rnd 1: sc into the first st, skip 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip 1 st, *sc 1, skip 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip 1 st* until end of the rnd. Sl st in the first sc of the rnd.
Fasten off the contrast color.
Finishing
Weave in ends, and block to dimensions.
